a special edition of "starting point" from newtown, connecticut. we begin right now. >>> welcome, everybody. a special edition of "starting point," live this morning from newtown, connecticut, the site, of course, where an unthinkable massacre at an elementary school has really shifted the landscape in the gun control debate. here is the latest on that president obama meeting with senior staff and cabinet members yesterday, to see proposals that will include reinstating a ban on automatic weapons. overnight, we've learned dick's sporting goods has banned the sale of ar-15 rifles and other guns like it. in fact, the modern sporting rifles section of dick's website, blank this morning. the company released a statement saying this. out of respect for the victims and their families, we have removed all guns in our store nearest newtown and suspended the sale of modern sporting rifles in all of our stores chain wide. in this community, grief counselors and extra police patrols will be on hand this morning when children, all over newtown head back to class for the first time since friday. sandy h

"starting point" begins right now. >>> well, our starting point, a brutal winter storm battering the northeast and torturing holiday travelers all over the country. here it is on the radar. the system is expected to dump up to two feet of snow on central maine today. six states are under winter storm warnings, pennsylvania, new york, massachusetts, new hampshire, vermont, and of course maine. everyone there could see at least a foot of snow. more than 200,000 customers spanning several states are already without power. more than 1700 flights had to be cancelled yesterday, hundreds more have already been taken off the board this morning and that number is expected to climb. six deaths are being blamed on this system since tuesday, and the threat hasn't passed yet. meteorologist bonnie schneider tracking the storm from the cnn weather center in atlanta. but first inez is live in syracuse, new york, where she's been -- there's a great deal of sno

, connecticut. four more funerals scheduled today. vicky societo will be laid to r, and three children. daniel barden, caroline previdi. students will not return until after winter break at sandy hook. they are talking about bringing them back, and it's not possible to do. and many parents supported that as well. they will be moving when they open the school to a completely different area, different school. sandra endohas that, good morning. >> good morning, soledad. a lot of students and parents we spoke to say the first day of school was anything but a regular day, despite the goal no make sure students in huetown return return to a sense of normalcy. a lot say there were somber moments in the classrooms yesterday, as well as emotions running high and a lot of kids said police officers, grief counselors and comfort dogs to help kids adjust. they say that most of the day was spent by faculty talking to the kids about what happened and also dealing with their feelings. of course, again, the grief is just gripping this community. four more funerals today. three first graders and one heroic teac

in newtown, connecticut are paying tribute to sandy hock's victims. a kindl is being lit for each children and 6 adults and volunteers are being asked to take half-hour gifts to make sure candles keep burning. one mother said, quote, it's all about the kids and the families and newtown police officers who have began through so much have received an entire gift. the whole force got the day off thanks to officers from other communities filling in for them. >> the pope's message. make room for god. he said the faster we could move, the more efficient or time-saying appliances become, the less time we have. he also said we're so full of ourselves we don't make room for each other and he called for peace in the middle east and the end to the violence in tieria. thousands celebrated christmas in the same place this we believe josephus was born. >>> hollywood is mourning the death of jack klugman this morning the versatile actor was loved by millions of tv viewers. younger fans probably remember him as a crime-fighting coroner in the hit tv show "quincy." he'll probably be best remembered for his
